Si has decidido embarcarte en la (acertadísima) aventura de hacer un Working Holiday en Japón, Australia, Canadá, Nueva Zelanda u otros, ¡necesitarás un seguro médico!

If you’ve made the (great) decision of packing your stuff to live a Working Holiday experience in Japan, Australia, Canada, New Zealand or others… You’ll need a health insurance!

Como sabréis, los que vivimos en España tenemos la enooorme suerte de tener una sanidad prácticamente gratuita, especialmente si eres joven y todavía no has trabajado, porque en ese caso nada habrá salido aún de tu bolsillo. Sin embargo, siento decirte que en los países que vas a visitar no son así. Son increíbles países con un gran sistema sanitario también, sí, peeeeero… ¡De pago! Y no un pago pequeño, sino un pago que puede ser bastante elevado (incluso de cientos o miles de euros para algo que te saldría gratis en España) si no tienes un seguro médico privado que te respalde.

As you may know, the ones who live in Spain we are amazingly lucky to have an almost free health system. Especially if you’re young and haven’t worked yet in Spain, you’ll pay absolutely nothing. It’s your parents who will pay for you through their taxes; so it’s only when you start working when you’ll start also paying for your public health insurance through your taxes. However, these incredible countries which such a professional health system, too, are not free! But really expensive! If you don’t have any private health insurance and you find yourself in the unfortunate situation of visiting the doctor, you’ll may need to pay hundreds or even thousands of dollars for something that would be free in Spain! This is why you need a health insurance. In some countries, actually, you’re not allowed to live there unless you pay for a private health insurance there.

En mi caso, he vivido temporalmente en Australia (6 meses) y en Japón (1 año). En Australia estuve con visado de estudiante y en Japón estoy con visado de Working Holiday.

In my case I’ve temporarily lived in Australia (for 6 months) and Japan (for 1 year). In Australia I had a student visa and in Japan I currently have a Working Holiday visa.

Y puesto que para cada una de mis estancias en el extranjero estuve buscando diversas compañías de seguros médicos, hoy quiero recomendaros la que escogí para mi Working Holiday en Japón.

For both of my stays abroad I have done some research about different health insurance companies. And here I recommend you the one I chose for my Working Holiday in Japan.

Mi recomendación: Seguros Chapka

Así se llama la compañía que he usado para contratar mi seguro médico privado en Japón. En su web podréis ver todos los seguros que ofrecen, que no son pocos:

• Seguros de asistencia para viajes.  / Assistant insurance plan for trips.
• Seguros para mochileros que viajan por el mundo. / Insurance plan for backpackers. 
• Seguros para voluntariados. / Insurance plan for volunteers abroad.
• Seguros para Working Holiday. / Insurance plan for Working Holiday.

Además, tienen asistencia en español, inglés y francés (ya que es una empresa francesa) y los seguros valen para cualquier nacionalidad europea 🙂

What’s more, you can contact them in French, English and Spanish (as it’s a well-known French company). And you can book an insurance plan from them as long as you’re European 🙂

¿Por qué elegí Chapka? / Why did I choose Chapka?

Porque me pareció la más fiable ya que pocas compañías están especializadas en Working Holiday como lo está esta. Además, me pareció una buena relación calidad-precio, ya que por menos dinero cubría todo lo que a mí me interesaba.

I felt Chapka Assurances was the most reliable option as few companies are specialised in Working Holiday programs as this is. What’s more, I found it has a very good quality-price ratio, so for the money I paid for the insurance I have everything I wanted covered.

Además, la solicitud fue sencilla y recibes la tarjeta por email de modo que simplemente tienes que imprimirla y llevarla en tu cartera.

In addition, it is quite easy to get information from their website and apply for the insurance. And you receive your health insurance card right after through email so you can print it at home, at your hostel or wherever you are; and carry it in your wallet.

¿Y qué tal el servicio prestado? / How’s their service? Am I satisfied?

Afortunadamente aún no he tenido que usar el seguro (y espero seguir sin necesitarlo), así que no puedo dar mi opinión personal respecto a ello; ni mis amigos que también cogieron este seguro. Lo que sí sé es que, pese a que nunca tuve que usarlo ni en Australia ni en Japón, es realmente necesario tenerlo. En caso contrario, sé que no tendría dinero suficiente o que me quedaría a 0 € si tuviera que ir al médico sin seguro privado. ¡Así que estoy satisfecha igualmente y la atención al cliente es de 10!

Well, fortunately I haven’t found myself in the situation of using it so far (and I hope it won’t change). Therefore, I can’t give my personal opinion about it; and so the friends I have who also booked this insurance. What I’m sure about is, although I’ve never used my health insurance in Australia or Japan, I’m really happy I booked it. It’s something really necessary. Otherwise, I wouldn’t have had enough money or I would have run out of it if I’d had to visit the doctor without a private insurance! So I’m really happy and satisfied with it and their customer service is top!

Y lo más importante hoy en día… Cubre los gastos médicos por coronavirus. / And the most important aspect nowadays… It covers the medical expenses due to coronavirus

Especialmente ahora, con la situación de pandemia mundial por el coronavirus, es muy importante tener en cuenta qué seguros cubren hospitalización, repatriación, etc. En el caso concreto de Chapka, por suerte, la mayoría de los seguros lo cubren, siempre y cuando hayas contraído el virus ya en el país de destino y cuyo acceso no esté restringido por el Ministerio de Asuntos Exteriores o la OMS. Tanto en su cuenta de Instagram como en su web viene todo muy detallado.

Especially nowadays due to the global coronavirus pandemic it is really important to carefully check which insurance programs cover the hospitalization, repatriation, etc. Fortunately, most Chapka insurances cover them, as long as you have been infected already in the country of destination and the access to that country is not restricted by your Government or the WHO.
