MI PROPIO ÍTACA

Llevaba tan solo tres semanas en Australia (una en Gold Coast y dos en Brisbane) cuando organicé mi primera escapadita: ¡BYRON BAY!

I had been living in Australia for only three weeks so far (one in the Gold Coast and two in Brisbane) when I planned my first trip: BYRON BAY! 🙂

Y escribo Byron Bay en mayúsculas porque ya os digo que desde que llegué a Australia no paraba de oír que Byron Bay era el paraíso situado al norte de New South Wales, justo en la frontera con Queensland (¡lo cual era perfecto para mí!).

And I type Byron Bay in capital letters as I can tell you since I arrived in Australia I didn’t stop hearing Byron Bay was the paradise located in the North of New South Wales, just in the border between New South Wales and Queensland (so it was perfect for me as I lived quite near!).

Por lo que decían, parecía que Byron Bay era la meca para cualquier surfero, hippie o amante de Australia en general. ¡Byron Bay era un must que no podía faltar en mi lista de destinos! Y no podéis imaginar lo feliz que me hizo el haber aparecido allí tan pronto. Primer destino de mi bucket list, ¡tachado!

According to what the used to say, it seemed Byron Bay was the mecca for every surfer, hippie or Australia lover in general! Byron Bay was a ‘must’ I couldn’t miss! So you can’t imagine how happy I became when I turned up there so soon in my stay in Australia. First destination from my bucket list, off! √

Allí mucha gente va descalza, toca música junto a la playa… Y lo que más me gustó es que ¡puede ser fácilmente la ciudad más relajada (easy-going) de todas! Para quien esté interesado en vivir en Byron Bay, no es que haya mucho trabajo, por eso de ser una ciudad pequeña, pero sí que hay cursos de inglés. ¡Así que puedes cruzar el charco con un visado de estudiante e instalarte en esta ciudad si ya te ha conquistado! Por algo será que Chris Hemsworth y Elsa Pataky viven en una granja de los alrededores de Byron Bay, ¿no? 😉

There, many people are barefoot or play music next to the beach… And what I liked the most is that it may be easily the most easy-going city among all! For whom is interested in living in Byron Bay, well, there’s not much work to do as it’s a small city, but there are English courses! So if you wanna cross the ocean with a Student Visa and settle in this unique city, you can! I am sure the aussie actor Chris Hemsworth and his Spanish wife actress Elsa Pataky live here for some good reasons 😉

 

Main Beach

Nada más llegar a Byron Bay, pasando por calles con casitas preciosas que me recuerdan a Gold Coast, encontramos Main Beach.

As soon as we got to Byron Bay we drove through some streets with beautiful little houses like the ones in the Gold Coast and then we found Main Beach.

Como su nombre indica, Main Beach es la playa principal de Byron Bay: es muy accesible, ya que la zona principal y turística de la ciudad se encuentra justo a orillas de la playa, y allí encontrarás también muchos hostales, tiendas, restaurantes y apartamentos de primera línea de playa.

As the name says, Main Beach is the main beach in Byron Bay: it is very accessible (as the main and touristy area of the city is located right there) and there you can find many backpackers, shops, restaurants and rental apartments.

Main Beach de Byron Bay fue mi primera playa australiana tras Surfers’ Paradise en Gold Coast y desde que la pisé podría decir que para mí Gold Coast dejó de ser mi primer destino playero favorito (lo siento, Gold Coast, aunque sigues siendo la que me conquistaste nada más pisar Australia, ¡y más que preciosa!).

This beach was my first aussie beach after Surfers’ Paradise in the Gold Coast, and since I stepped on it I can say the Gold Coast stopped being my most favourite beach destination (sorry, Gold Coast, but you’re still the city that conquered me right when I got off the plane in Australia, and still beautiful!).

¡La playa de Byron Bay era preciosa! Se encontraba rodeada de montañas, con el simbólico faro de Byron Bay en una de las montañas en un extremo, un montón de ambiente tanto juvenil como familiar, un mar tan azul… Además, ¡nos lo pasamos genial con las olas y buceando entre los peces! Porque sí, esta imagen de mar azul, olas increíbles y peces es precisamente la costa este Australiana 😀

Byron Bay Main Beach was so beautiful! It is surrounded by mountains, with the symbolic Cape Byron Lighthouse on the top of one of them, and a good young and family atmosphere, and such a blue water… Besides, we had so much fun with the waves and diving among the fish! Yes, this image of a blue sea, incredible waves and fish is actually the image of the Australian East coast! 🙂

El faro de Byron Bay / The lighthouse

Después de Main Beach vimos la puesta de sol desde el faro de Byron Bay. Antes que nada, sé que hay muchas ciudades costeras en Australia con un faro súper bonito y pintoresco. Pero yo he de decir, ya que estuve allí y verdaderamente me enamoró, que ¡como el de Byron Bay, ninguno! ¿Cómo puede ser tan bonito?

After Main Beach we headed to the top of Byron Bay to see the sunset from Cape Byron Lighthouse. First of all, I know many coastal cities in Australia have a very beautiful and picturesque lighthouse. However, as I’ve been there and I fell in love with it, I must say there’s no other like Byron Bay’s! How can it be so beautiful?

Fue de las veces que más afortunada me he sentido en Australia.
It was one of moments I felt luckiest the most in Australia.

Compañía perfecta, vistas y colores perfectos al horizonte… Simplemente me inundó de plenitud. Me encantó. Lo recomiendo: ¡La hora del atardecer es la mejor!

Perfect company, perfect colours and views on the horizon… It drowned me with joy. I loved it. I highly recommend the sunset time!

 

Nosotros seguimos el camino que hay alrededor del faro y que todo el mundo hace porque es desde donde se tienen las vistas más bonitas. Si vas a Byron Bay, ¡esto no te lo puedes perder! Un importante punto (aún más a favor) es que se puede acceder al faro de Byron Bay en coche y allí hay aparcamiento.

We followed the walk you can find around the cliff of the lighthouse as everyone can get the best views from there. If you go to Byron Bay, you can’t miss it! Another good point about Cape Byron Lighthouse is that you can access there by car and park it there (there’s parking area)!

Tallow Beach

Por último, decidimos pasar el domingo de relax en una de las mejores playas que he pisado. Sinceramente, ¡Tallow Beach fue uno de mis grandes descubrimientos en Australia!

Finally, we decided to spend our last day before going back to class relaxing at one of the best beaches I’ve ever been to. Honestly, Tallow Beach has been one of my greatest discoveries in Australia!

Vale, hay quienes pueden decir que se trata tan solo de una playa, pero si ya era inmensamente feliz antes de pisarla, ¡cuando la pisé lo fui aún más! Jamás había sentido tanta felicidad al ver una playa. Era completamente mi visión del paraíso.

Ok, there may be some people who think a beach is just a beach, but I must say that if I was already incredibly happy before going there, when I got there I was even more! I’ve never felt so much happiness for seeing a beach. It was my image of paradise.

Era la primera vez que estaba en una playa prácticamente desierta, infinita, rodeada únicamente de naturaleza en lugar de civilización, con la arena más fina, el mar más azul y las olas perfectas. ¡Realmente mi paraíso! Era, bajo mi punto de vista, la playa más bonita en la que había estado en mi vida.

It was my first time being on a practically deserted, endless beach, surrounded only by nature instead of buildings, with finer sand, the sea more blue and the perfect waves. Really my paradise! It was, under my point of view, the most beautiful beach I’d ever been to.

Me daban ganas de evadirme, de correr por la orilla, de pasar todo el rato en el agua; viendo estas playas, lo único importante en la vida era disfrutarlas. ¡Era simplemente preciosa!

I felt like thinking of anything else, like running on the shore, spending all time on the water. After seeing this kind of beach, the only thing that suddenly matters is to enjoy them. It was beautiful!

Eso sí, una cosa a tener en cuenta de Tallow Beach es que allí no hay socorristas, y esto es muy importante en Australia. El mar es nuestro mejor amigo pero también puede ser nuestro peor enemigo debido a las corrientes, las olas y -según la temporada del año- las medusas. Nosotros nos bañamos en la playa durante más de una hora seguida y nos lo pasamos genial, ningún problema, pero siempre viene bien estar alerta.

One thing is true: you need to keep in mind that there are no lifeguards in Tallow Beach, and this is very important in Australia. The sea is our best friend but it can also be our worst enemy due to the currents, the waves and -depending on the season- the jellyfish. We swam in the water for more than one hour in a row and we had much fun with no problems, but you should always be careful.

 

SOBRE TALLOW BEACH: Tallow Beach se encuentra a unos 3 km del centro de Byron Bay, por lo que la gente suele llegar allí en coche o en bici; ¡¡hay zona de aparcamiento!! 🙂 . Nosotros fuimos en octubre, por lo que no era temporada alta, pero en verano y vacaciones es muy probable que el aparcamiento esté completo y la play mucho más llena de gente. Por tanto, si te encantan las playas desiertas, ¡evita esas fechas!

ABOUT TALLOW BEACH: Tallow Beach is located around 3km far from the city centre, so people usually go there by bike or by car; there is parking area! 🙂 . We went there in October, so it wasn’t high season, but in summer and in holidays it is very likely to be full and more crowded. Therefore, if you like deserted beaches, try to avoid those dates!

Accommodation in Byron Bay

Improvisé esta escapada de fin de semana junto con mis compañeros de clase justo la semana antes. Nos alojamos en un motel en Ballina, a las afueras de Byron Bay, ya que si pretendes buscar alojamiento pocos días (e incluso tal vez un par de semanas) antes de tu viaje, ¡lo normal es que ya está todo cogido! Byron Bay es tan popular que, al no tratarse de una gran ciudad, ¡todos los alojamientos se llenan rapidisimo! Por ello, buscar alojamiento con antelación es muy importante, ¡tanto si tratas de alquilar un apartamento junto a la playa como si vas de backpacker!

I improvised this weekend trip with my classmates right the week before. We slept in a motel in Ballina, on the South of Byron Bay, ‘cause if you pretend to search for accommodation a few days (or even perhaps a couple of weeks) before your trip, it is really likely to be all full! Byron Bay is so popular that, as it’s not a big city, every accommodation gets full quickly! For this reason, searching for accommodation in Byron Bay with much anticipation can be very important for you, regardless you want to rent an apartment at the beachfront or go to a backpackers’!

Los backpackers son viajeros que prácticamente cargan solo una mochila y que se alojan en albergues que también se conocen allí como backpackers’. Es la opción más barata que, por lo general, te sale por 30-40 AUD la noche (y algunos incluyen desayuno). Realmente como española que soy, no es que sea muy económico si tienes en cuenta que algunos no tienen una tan buena calidad/precio (muchas veces ligada al nº de personas con las que compartes habitación: a más personas, menos calidad) y si lo comparas con el precio en Europa. Aun así, por lo general, es la mejor opción (para tu bolsillo) para viajar solo o con tus amigos si te sientes con edad y presupuesto para dormir en una litera compartida. ¡Hay muchísimos albergues de estos y se usan un montón! La cadena más famosa de albergues, que se encuentra en muchas localizaciones australianas, es YHA.

Backpackers are the travellers who usually carry just one backpack and sleep in hostels colloquially also known as backpackers’. This is the cheapest option as it usually costs around 30-40 AUD the night (some of them including breakfast). As Spanish, I should say it’s not so cheap if you care about the quality/price (many times linked to the number of people you share the room with: the more people, the less comfortable) and you compare it to Europe. However, this is probably the best option for your budget both if you travel alone or with friends and you feel like sharing bunk beds and bathrooms with others. There are many backpackers’ in Australia and people use them a lot! The most popular and widespread hostels company is YHA.

Aun así, amigos míos se alojaron en otras ocasiones en un camping, ya que Byron Bay es un destino muy concurrido para aquellas personas con un espíritu más hippie o que les encante estar en contacto con la naturaleza. Por ello hay muchas zonas de camping donde la gente joven se aloja allí incluso durante ¡meses! Yo no me considero hippie, ¡pero el ambiente de Byron Bay me encantó! Así que descarto la idea de probar un camping la próxima vez que vaya y así vivir Byron Bay desde otra perspectiva 🙂

Also, some friends of mine slept in a campsite, as Byron Bay is a very good place for those with a more hippie spirit or those who like being in contact with nature. This is why many young people go to campsite areas in Byron Bay and stay even for months! I don’t consider myself hippie but I liked that lifestyle! So if I go back to Byron Bay, I don’t discard the idea of going camping and living Byron Bay from a different perspective 🙂

¡Espero que os haya gustado conocer un poquito sobre Byron Bay, aunque mi experiencia haya sido más cortita de lo que me hubiera gustado! Lo próximo que voy a contar es sobre mi segunda escapadita de fin de semana, ¡¡¡¡que me enamoró aún más de Queensland!!!! ¡¡¡¡Los parques naturales de los alrededores de Gold Coast: Springbrook y Lamington!!!!
