Lo dejé para el final del post anterior sobre Sídney pero realmente ésta fue la esencia de todos los días que estuve en Sídney… Y una vez que lo he vivido allí puedo decir, que con razón…
I left it for the end of the previous post about Sydney but this was actually the meaning of all the days I spent in Sydney… And once I’ve lived it there I can certainly say…
¡ES UN SUEÑO PASAR EL FIN DE AÑO EN SÍDNEY!
IT IS A DREAM TO SPEND NEW YEAR’S EVE IN SYDNEY!
Y puesto que ha sido una de las experiencias más memorables de mi vida y hay taaaanto que se podría detallar sobre este día, escribo esta entrada exclusivamente para explicar cómo viví yo y cómo es el Fin de Año en Sídney 🙂
And because it has been one of the most memorable experiences in my life and there is sooooo much I could describe about this day, I am writing this post exclusively for explaining how I lived and how New Year’s Eve in Sydney is 🙂

Además, no podía encontrar otro momento mejor que éste para escribir sobre este Fin de Año tan único… Han pasado desde entonces más de 9 meses (y 6 desde que dejé Australia), y aún no hay día que no eche de menos este paraíso de isla-continente y, sobre todo, no hay día que no sea consciente del cambio en mi vida que surgió a raíz de mi experiencia allí. Y los fuegos artificiales de Sídney no fueron más que el pistoletazo que me hizo ser aún más consciente de ello.
Besides, I couldn’t find any better moment than this one to write about this unique New Year’s Eve… It’s been more than 9 months from then (and 6 since I left Australia), and there’s still no day I don’t miss this paradise of island-continent and, above all, there’s no day I am not conscious of the change my life experienced because of my stay there. And the Sydney fireworks weren’t nothing else than the spark that made me became even more aware of it.
El Año Nuevo en Sídney fue el ecuador de mi estancia en Australia. Llevaba ya tres meses allí, tres meses que habían pasado como un kamikaze, aprovechando al máximo cada segundo que me regalaba el día (desde que amanecía a las 5.30 am hasta que, siguiendo mi reloj biológico español, me acostaba siempre más tarde de las 12.00 am).
New Year’s Eve in Sydney was the equator of my stay in Australia. I had already lived there for three months so far, three months that had gone by so fast, taking the most of every second the day offered me (from the sunrise at 5.30 am until, following my Spanish inner clock, I went to bed always at over 12.00 am).
Por ello, en aquellas 15 horas que pasé sentada a los pies de la majestuosa Opera House fue cuando comencé a reflexionar, cuando por fin pareció haberse congelado por primera vez el transcurso del tiempo en Australia: «¿Qué he hecho en estos tres meses? ¿Qué sitios (innumerables) he visitado ya? ¿Cómo me han hecho evolucionar?» Y tras esa reflexión pude afirmar que esos tres meses habían sido (junto con los otros dos meses y medio que les continuaron) los mejores meses de mi vida adulta.
Because of this, it was during those 15 hours I spent seated at the feet of the majestic Opera House when I started to reflect, when the time finally seemed to have got frozen for the first time during my stay in Australia: «What have I done these three months? Which (uncountable) places have I already visited? How did they make me evolve?» And after this reflection I could affirm those three months had been (with the two and a half following ones) the best of my adult life.
Por ello, gracias, Sídney, por haber cumplido ese sueño y por haberme hecho un poquito más feliz (¡si cabía, que parece que siempre cabe más felicidad!) este 31 de diciembre, cumpliendo tantas cosas que llevaba en mí.
For this reason: Thanks, Sydney. Thanks for making that dream come true and for making me a bit happier (if it was possible to be even happier!) last 31st December, making true so many things I always wanted to do.
Y bueno, con esto ya os he adelantado un poco cómo viví el fin de año en Australia, pero como supongo que lo realmente interesante para quien esté leyendo esto (y lo que realmente quería compartir yo, que por algo también tengo mente científica) es ver cómo es el Año Nuevo en Sídney… ¡Aquí va! 🙂

How New Year’s Eve in Sydney works!
Si habéis leído los párrafos anteriores posiblemente ya os habréis dado cuenta de dónde me situé yo para ver los fuegos artificiales de Año Nuevo, ya que hay muchíiiiiisimos puntos donde puedes situarte (llamados vantage points), y dependiendo de donde estés, los podrás ver de forma diferente, como explico justo a continuación.
In case you have imagined everything perfectly while reading the previous paragraphs, you might have already realized where I was located for watching the New Year’s Eve fireworks. Actually, there are maaaaaany locations from which you could see them (called vantage points), and depending on that location, you could see them:
- Mejor (más cerca) – Better (closer),
- Más completos (los fuegos artificiales no salían todos desde el mismo punto, sino desde más de cinco puntos distintos del muelle, por lo que desde la Opera House solo podíamos ver aproximadamente uno o dos) – More completed (the fireworks weren’t released all from the same spot, but from more than five different spots throughout the harbour, reason why I could only see approximately one or two from the Opera House),
- Con más o menos gente (mi punto estaba lleno; mientras más popular, más se llena, obviamente) – With more or less people (my spot was full; the more popular, the more crowded, obviously),
- Y con más o menos horas de espera (yo no iba a dejar pasar esta oportunidad; elegí ir a Sídney en estas fechas y por algo era, así que mis 16 horas de espera no me las quitó nadie… jaja) – And with more or less waiting hours (I wasn’t going to miss this opportunity; this was the reason why I chose to go to Sydney that date, so I gladly spent my 16 waiting hours there… haha).
Sin embargo, ¡no todos estos spots son iguales! Cada uno tenía sus ventajas, sus inconvenientes, su aforo máximo, su hora de entrada y su hora a la que dicho aforo se completa segurísimo. Por lo tanto, decidir dónde ver los fuegos artificiales de Sídney es toda una estrategia. Afortunadamente, ¡tenemos la app y la web oficial del Año Nuevo en Sídney: www.sydneynewyearseve.com! En ella, puedes obtener información de todo tipo relativo a la Nochevieja, especialmente sobre los distintos vantage points, ¡y así ayudarte a decidir!
What’s more, each of them had its own advantages, its disadvantages, its capacity, its entry time and its time when it is completely full for sure. Therefore, deciding where to watch the Sydney fireworks is an absolute strategy! Fortunately, we can count with the official app and website of the Sydney New Year’s Eve: www.sydneynewyearseve.com! In it you can find much information about that night, specially about the different vantage points, so you can decide!
En mi caso, como sé que esto probablemente (quién sabe) es una vez en la vida, me dije: «Ya que estoy aquí, lo voy a hacer bien». Y decidí verlos justo a los pies de la Opera House, para poder tener esa vista que tanto me conquistó de Sídney nada más pisarla.
In my case, as I knew this was probably (who knows!) once in a lifetime, I said to myself: «Since I am here, I am gonna do it right.» So I decided to watch them right at the feet of the Opera House so I could have that view from Sydney that conquered me so deeply as soon as I stepped on it.
Como resultado tenía: a mis espaldas, la Opera House; y a mi frente, Harbour Bridge -¡desde donde se lanzan los fuegos artificiales más espectaculares!
As a result I had: at my back, the Opera House; at my front, Harbour Bridge -from where they release the most spectacular fireworks!
¿Ventajas de ver los fuegos desde la Opera House? / Advantages of my location?
¡Sentirme en pleno corazón de Sídney y justo en el lugar que más me gustó de la ciudad! Además, desde ahí, ¡se ven geniales los fuegos de Harbour Bridge!
Feeling right at the heart of Sydney, right at the place I liked the most from the city! Besides, from there… The Harbour Bridge fireworks are awesome!
¿Inconvenientes? / Disadvantages?
Que desde los más de cinco puntos desde los que se lanzan los fuegos desde la bahía, solo podía ver aproximadamente uno o dos (el que se lanza por detrás del Harbour Bridge). Y si quería ver bien los fuegos que salían desde la propia Opera House (de lo mejor, simplemente IMPRESIONANTE), tenía que girarme un poco, dejando de prestar un poco la atención a los del puente. Vamos, ¡que tenía que repartirme y tener los cinco sentidos concentrados en ello! Pero genial… ¡Sigo segura de que esta localización es una de las mejores!
Among the more than five spots from which the fireworks were released from the harbour I could only see one or two (the one released from behind Harbour Bridge). Besides, if I wanted to see well the fireworks from the Opera House (which were truly AMAZING), I had to turn back and move a bit my attention from the Harbour Bridge to focus on the ones from the Opera House. Despite this… It was great!!! I am still certain this location is one of the best!! 🙂
Por tanto, ¿cuál es realmente el mayor inconveniente de ver los fuegos junto a la Opera House? Therefore, what is really the main disadvantage of seeing the fireworks from the Opera House?
Que el aforo se completa muuuy pronto (que no rápido, realmente). Es decir… La entrada a este recinto (que realmente es un espacio público sin una puerta de entrada tal cual, pero cuya entrada sí está controlada este día) abre aproximadamente a las 8:30 am, lo cual significa que ya hay gente haciendo cola desde antes de las 8:00 am. ¡Y a la 1:00 pm ya estaba completo!
Then the disadvantage would be that it gets full reaaally soon (not quickly ‘though, actually). I mean… The entrance to this area is controlled, and it opens at around 8:00 am, which means there are people already queuing from before 8:00 am. And it was already full house at 1:00 pm!
Consejos / Tips
Consejo nº1: Nada más entrar…
Tip no. 1: Once you enter…
Nada más entrar, ¡decide bien dónde instalarte! Este momento es clave y consiste nada más y nada menos que en marcar tu territorio. Decides dónde colocarte y ahí, ¡toma ya!, plantas tu toalla, tus cojines, tus sillas de playa, tu paraguas que hará las veces de antisol… En definitiva, todo el tinglar que te hayas traído (porque la gente lo trae, y bien que es necesario).
Once you enter, decide really well where to settle! This moment is key and just consists on demarcating your territory. You decide where to set and, here we go!, you leave there your towel, your cushions, your beach chairs, your umbrella which will help you as a parasol… In conclusion, all the stuff you’ve brought as companion for all the wait (as people do take all that, yeah. It is absolutely worth. 100% necessary!).
En mi caso, llegué a las 8:30 am, entré al rato (puede que una hora), cogí mi huequecito del suelo, puse mis toallas, cojines y paraguas-antisol y… ¡A esperar! El primer objetivo del día ya estaba cumplido 😉
In my case, I arrived at 8:30 am, I entered a while later (maybe one hour), I got my little spot on the ground, I placed my towels, cushions and my umbrella-sunblock there and… Ready to wait! First goal of the day, achieved! 😉
Durante estas 15 horas de espera, que no se hicieron tan largas hasta cerca de las 8 pm (hora desde la cual aún quedaban otras 4 horas, claro), las empleamos dando cortos paseos por los alrededores, yendo al baño, quedando con mi amigo chileno que se encontraba en el mismo área que nosotros, aprovechando para escribir y responder todos los whatsapps que desde que llegué a Australia no había tenido tiempo de prestar mucha atención…
During those 15 hours of waiting -that weren’t actually that long for me until it got 8 pm (hour from which I still had other 4 more ahead, of course), I took the most of them for walking around there, visiting the toilets, meeting my Chilean friend who was also at the same vantage point, and finally writing all the whatsapps I didn’t have enough time to pay attention to since I arrived in Australia!
Consejo nº2: Qué llevar contigo
Tip no. 2: What to bring
Y es que en cuanto al calor, ¡sí, hace mucho calor! Sobre todo si tienes en cuenta que vas a estar sentado en el suelo bajo el sol durante más de diez horas. De ahí la importancia de lo que cuento a continuación.
Yeah, it’s really hot there! Specially when you keep in mind you are going to be seated on the floor under the sun for more than 10 hours. This is why it’s important to bring with you:
– El paraguas-parasol (¡Totalmente necesario! En mi caso tuvimos suerte porque el día estuvo un poco nublado, de modo que mientras hacía sombra, ¡maravilloso!, pero cuando salía el sol… ¡Más vale que te escondieras bajo cualquier cosa que llevaras como parasol! ¡Las horas de espera se notan demasiado con sol!) – The umbrella-parasol (absolutely necessary! In my case we were lucky as it was a bit cloudy, but when the sun came out from time to time… You’d better hide under anything similar to a parasol!);
– La crema solar, ESENCIAL y de obligado uso aquí en Australia – The sunscreen, which you know it is ESSENTIAL and personally compulsory to use here in Oz;
– Gafas de sol – Sunglasses;
– Ropa fresquita, que me conozco a gente que luego va y se pone, por ejemplo, ropa oscura (ejem, no quiero hacer alusión a mi amigo chileno… :P) – Cool clothes for the heat, as I know people that choose to wear dark clothes in summer (ehem, I don’t wanna make reference to a certain Chilean friend… :P);
– Cojines… (¡…no es broma! Nosotros llevamos un par de cojines porque pensad estar sentados 15 horas en pleno suelo llano… ¡Si mucha gente se llevaba sillas de playa! Pero pasé de comprarlas porque al final me habría salido el día más caro de lo que quería jaja) – Cushions… (… not kidding! Think you are going to be seated for 15 hours just on a flat floor… No way! Actually, many many people took there the typical chairs you take to the beach! That’s also a really good option if you can ;))
– Agua, mucha agua (aunque afortunadamente en mi zona pusieron fuentes para rellenarla) – Water, plenty of water (luckily you can refill there! At least at my location);
– ¡Y comida! Para mí este es siempre un buen entretenimiento y así te ahorras dinero allí, aunque vendían hamburguesas, perritos calientes, etc. – And food! For me this is always a good way to get entertained and also you can save some money, ‘though they sold burgers, hot dogs, etc.
Y sobre todo, muchiiiiiiisimas ganas de disfrutar de este momento sabiendo que estás en Sídney, bajo la Opera House (o aquella zona que decidieras), comenzando el Año Nuevo como siempre habías soñado 😀
And above all, a biiiiiiiiiiiig enthusiasm for enjoying the most that moment you know you are in Sydney, next to the Opera House (or that spot you decided!), starting the New Year as you’ve always dreamed! 😀
Consejo nº3: ¿Con cuánta anticipación ir al lugar desde el que quiero ver los fuegos?
Tip no. 3: How much in advance should we go to where we want to see the fireworks from?
Esta pregunta me la hice varias veces desde que llegué a Sídney. Y mi respuesta es que dependiendo de dónde vayas a buscar tu hueco, se recomienda ir antes o después. Yo decidí ir a una de las localizaciones que se llena más rápido, y así fue: ¡a la 1 de la tarde el aforo de la Opera House ya estaba completo!
I asked myself this question several times since I got to Sydney. So my answer is that depending on which spot you want to choose, it is recommended to go sooner or later. I wanted to go to one of the most popular spots here, one of the ones that get full the faster, and so it was: the Opera House one was already full at 1pm!
Así que ten cuidado con buscar tu hueco por la tarde, porque es muy posible que el que se te antoje escoger ya esté lleno. Y, por supuesto, no vale mucho la pena ir a probar suerte, ya que mientras te mueves de un punto de la ciudad a otro para ver cómo está el ambiente, es posible que ya haya cambiado mucho el aforo de otro punto, y así. Por tanto, yo recomiendo hacer un listado por de los puntos desde los que queréis ver los fuegos de Año Nuevo por orden de preferencia, y ya, a partir de ahí, si vuestra primera elección está completa, podéis ir a la segunda, y así.
So be careful about heading to your spot in the afternoon or the evening, as it is really possible that the one you want is already full. Besides, it is not very recommended to try and have a look to different spots, as, while you move from one to another, the number of people there might have changed a lot, getting full house while you’re moving there. Thus, I suggest that you make a list with the spots you’d like to watch the fireworks from, ordered by your preference, so you can start heading to the first option in case it’s not full and so on.
Aun así, si no te ves o no te viene bien estar tantas horas sentada/o en el suelo, entonces esta localización no creo que sea para ti. De mis amigos, solo dos hicieron la misma espera que yo, mientras que los demás se acercaron directamente por la tarde a distintos puntos: algunos cruzando el puente (¡desde donde me dijeron que se veía genial!), otros desde justo debajo del puente en Circular Quay (donde tienes la vista más limitada pero bueno, ¡sin tan largas esperas!), etc.
However, if you don’t see yourself seated for so many hours or you can’t, then this vantage point is not good for you. Among my friends, only three of us waited this much. The rest of them, they went around there in the afternoon, some crossed the bridge (from where they said it was very beautiful!) and some stayed around Circular Quay very close to Harbour Bridge (where they had a limited view but, at least, without waiting!).
En definitiva, si tienes pensado un sitio que quieres sí o sí, te recomiendo que vayas por la mañana. Y si te da más igual, no veo problema en que sea por la tarde 😉 Eso sí, ¡todo acabará lleno de gente!
In conclusion, if you have any specific vantage point in mind that you don’t want to miss, then I recommend you that you go in the morning. By contrast, if you don’t care that much, then I don’t see any problem in going in the afternoon 😉 What’s true is that everything will end up really crowded!

Sin embargo, algo muuuy bueno y que os puede ayudar mucho es la app del Año Nuevo en Sídney #SydNYE que se encuentra gratuita en la Play Store. Ahí siempre podréis consultar todo lo siguiente y más.
However, something reaaaally usefull is the app #SydNYE that you can download for free from the Play Store. There you can get information such as:
- La cuenta atrás (¡súper emocionante a la vez que vas viendo todos los carteles con el logo del #SydNYE por la ciudad!) – The countdown (very exciting!);
- Las localizaciones disponibles para ver los fuegos y sus principales características (como las ventajas y desventajas) – The different available locations from where to see the fireworks and their main characteristics (e.g. the advantages and disadvantages);
- La hora a la que abren y a la que se suele completar el aforo (súuuuper útil) – The opening time of each location and the time they’re usually full house (suuuuuper useful!);
- Y cuándo está completado (los que están llenos -por lo que ya no se permite la entrada a ellos- aparecen en rojo, y los que aún están abiertos, en verde) – And when they are full house they appear in the app in red, whereas the ones still open appear in green (which is useful if you aren’t still in one of them!)
Organización / Organization
Y aunque aún me queda por hablar de lo mejor del Año Nuevo en Sídney, ¡quiero agradecer y comentar cómo fue la organización del evento! ¡Increíble la organización del #SydNYE!
Even though I still have to talk about the best of the Sydney New Year’s Eve, I want to thank first and describe how the organization of the #SydNYE was! Incredible!
Habían colocado decenas y decenas de toilets de estos temporales… ¡que tenían papel y todo! ¡Y que incluso 12 horas después seguían limpios y sin oler mal! Y esto es porque había un montón de trabajadores que ayudaban con la organización y que limpiaban los toilets prácticamente cada vez que salía alguien. Y, además, la cola nunca superaba las dos personas al haber tantos toilets disponibles. ¡Esto en España no pasa!
They had set there dozens of temporary toilets that even had toilet paper (remember I come from Spain)! And even 12 hours later they were still clean and not smelly! And this is thanks to the many workers helping and cleaning there almost every time someone got out of the toilet. What’s more, the queue was never more than two people long as there were so many available toilets. This is unbelievable in Spain!
Y al salir de los toilets, cómo no, lavabos que habían instalado con dispensadores de jabón y todo. ¡Daba gusto sentirte australiana! Y es que la calidad de vida aquí está presente en todo momento.
Finally, when you exit the toilets area, you find sinks and soap dispensers to wash your hands. It feels great to feel Australian! I really value the quality of life here.
Y continuando con la labor de organización, era genial cómo lo tenían todo: apertura de puertas según los tiempos que tenían estudiados, controles de seguridad a la entrada, delimitación de las áreas mediante vallas, servicio de venta de comida, zona de ambulancia y primeros auxilios, anuncios y estimaciones de la compleción del aforo en tanto por megafonía como a través de la app, recordatorios también por megafonía para que rellenes agua y no te mueras deshidratado (porque sí, había fuentes de agua disponibles para rellenar tu propia botella), etc.
And continuing with the organization, it was great how they organized everything: the entry control, the food market option, the ambulance and nursing area, the announcements both through the loudspeakers and the app when the capacity of people was reached, several reminders for you to refill your bottle of water and not to die dehydrated (yes, there were also drinking fountains there!), etc.
Los increíbles fuegos artificiales /
The amazing fireworks
¿Merecen la pena los fuegos artificiales de Sídney o son como otros cualquiera? ¡Por supuesto! No son como otros cualquiera, y os lo dice una persona no-amante de los fuegos artificiales ni de cualquier otro evento que suponga sonidos tan fuertes.
Are the Sydney fireworks worth it or are they like any others? Absolutely -and fortunately, they’re not like any others! And this is written by a person who is not passionate about fireworks, as I don’t like such loud sounds.
Sin embargo, estos fuegos artificiales en ningún momento causaron esa desagradable sensación en mí. Unas horas antes, a las 9:00 pm, se celebraron unos fuegos artificiales en el mismo lugar, denominados «de familia«, de modo que eran más temprano, y claro, menos espectaculares también. Y yo ya pensaba: «Si estos me han encantado, ¿cómo serán los siguientes?» Y es que los fuegos principales de Año Nuevo no me defraudaron nada nada… ¡Sino todo lo contrario!
However, these fireworks didn’t cause me at all that unpleasant feeling. What’s more, a few hours before, at 9:00 pm, they launched what they called something similar to «children fireworks», reason why they were earlier and, of course, less spectacular as well. But yet I thought: «Wow, if I have already loved these ones, how will the next fireworks be?» And the main New Year fireworks didn’t disappoint me at all… But the opposite!
La multitudinaria cuenta atrás del último minuto del año, la combinación de luces, el sorprenderte fuego tras fuego, la repentina aparición de ráfagas de fuegos artificiales desde el puente, así como cuando cayó una cascada como de gotas de agua hechas a partir, por supuesto, de fuegos artificiales, mientras que tanto el Harbour Bridge como la Opera House no paraban de lanzar sus mejores fuegos hacia el cielo… Y en ese momento, cuando parecía que no podía ser más bonito, te encuentras rodeada de miles de personas emitiendo un «wooooow» unísono de admiración y felicidad al verlos… Es entonces cuando tu interior dice: «M****, ¡éste es el final de los fuegos sin lugar a dudas! ¡¿Cómo es posible que ya hayan pasado los 10 minutos?! ¡Necesito más!»
The last-minute-of-the-year countdown sharing your voice with thousands of people from all over the world, the combination of lights, to be surprised firework after firework, the unexpected and cool fireworks launched from the Bridge, together with the ones that looked like a waterfall of water drops made… by fireworks! And meanwhile, both the Harbour Bridge and the Opera House sending without a break their best fireworks to the night sky… And in that moment in which it seemed it couldn’t be more beautiful, when you find yourself surrounded by thousands of people shouting a «wooooow» of admiration and happiness in unison… Then is when you feel: «f****, this is with no doubt the end of the fireworks! How is it possible these 10 minutes have already passed by?! I need more!«
Y entonces sientes con total certeza que Sídney es un acierto. Que el Año Nuevo aquí no son unos fuegos artificiales comunes ni una experiencia cualquiera, sino que verdaderamente sobrepasa tus expectativas y te hace sentir que has estado en el mejor comienzo del 2017 del mundo.
And then you are certain that Sydney is a good choice. That New Year here is not some common fireworks or any simple experience, but it is truly beyond your expectations and makes you feel you’ve been to the best start of the year 2017 in the world.
