No sólo es la ciudad que representa a Australia por todo el mundo, aquella que tienes que visitar porque si no la visitas parece que no has estado en Australia; sino porque verdaderamente tiene su encanto… Da la sensación de que nunca te cansarías de ella.
It is not only the city that represents Australia worldwide, the one you have to visit because if you don’t it seems you haven’t been to Australia; but because it truly has its charm. It makes you feel you would never get tired of it.
Y hablando de Sídney, no puedo esperar a teletransportarme directamente a mi lugar favorito de la ciudad, aquel que me envolvió y me emocionó…
And talking about Sydney, I can’t wait for jumping directly to my favourite place of the city, the exciting one…
¡¡¡LA OPERA HOUSE!!!
Verdaderamente es preciosa, arquitectónicamente increíble, recubierta como de azulejos blancos, con una forma única y cautivadora. Se encuentra situada y orientada como dominando el muelle de Sídney, prestando atención a cada embarcación que cruce sus aguas. Como definiendo el corazón de Sídney. Haciendo a Sídney latir.
It is truly beautiful, architectonically amazing, covered by something like white tiles, with a unique and captivating shape. It is located and orientated like ruling the quay of Sydney, paying attention to every boat crossing its waters. Like defining the heart of Sydney. Making Sydney beat.
Y, cómo no, formando junto con el Puente del Puerto de Sídney (Harbour Bridge) la imagen más bonita de Sídney. O al menos, bajo mi punto de vista.
And, of course, along with Harbour Bridge, forming the most beautiful image from Sydney. At least, under my point of view.
Este fue mi primera parada en Sídney, y no puedo estar más contenta con ella. Llegué un 30 de diciembre y lo primero que quería hacer nada más pisar Sídney era descubrir este punto, situado en Circular Quay, una zona céntrica que tiene siempre mucha vida (principalmente turística) y desde la cual parten los ferries a las diferentes playas y calitas de Sydney (¡las cuales la hacen aún más mágica y de las cuales hablaré más abajo!).
This was my first stop in Sydney, and I can’t be happier with it. I arrived a 30th December and the first thing I wanted to do right after stepping in Sydney was to discover that place, located in Circular Quay, the centric area which is so touristy and from where ferries depart towards the different beaches of Sydney (the ones that make Sydney even more magical!)
Desde siempre, he aprendido a viajar sin expectativas, y así me ha ido bien. O más que bien. Aparecí en Circular Quay, sin saber bien en qué instante aparecería la Opera House ante mí. Sin saber previamente de la existencia de Harbour Bridge, éste me conquistó a primera vista (véase la foto de arriba) y no podía parar de disfrutar de la perspectiva desde Circular Quay y hacerme fotos con él, hasta que… Continuando un poquito más para delante… Ahí estaba. Tan impresionante y elegante, la Opera House.
Since always, I’ve learnt to travel without any expectations, and this how everything’s gone well. Or even better. I turned up in Circular Quay, without really knowing when the Opera House would appear right in front of me. And even without knowing previously about the existence of the Harbour Bridge, this one conquered me at first sight (the photo above) and I couldn’t stop enjoying that view from Circular Quay and taking photos with it until… Walking a little bit more… There it was. So impressive and elegant, the Opera House!
Me sentía emocionada e inundada de felicidad. ¡No podía creer que estuviera allí! ¡Y en la víspera de Nochevieja! ¡El símbolo de Sydney -y de Australia- era real! Y a mí no me dejó en absoluto indiferente. Sentía que estaba en la otra punta del mundo, feliz, descubriendo algunos de los lugares más maravillosos del mundo, y ahí estaba su símbolo, aquel con el que muchos españoles hemos soñado cada Año Nuevo desde nuestras casas, aquel que aparece en una de las mejores películas de la historia, Buscando a Nemo, aquel que realmente me ha marcado desde el primer instante en el que lo vi.
I felt excited and full of joy. I couldn’t believe I was there! Right the day before New Year’s Eve! The symbol of Sydney -and Australia- was real! And it moved me. I felt I was on the opposite part of the world, HAPPY, discovering some of the most wonderful places in the world; and there it was its symbol, the one that many Spanish have dreamt of every New Year from our houses; the one that appear in one of the best films in the history, Finding Nemo; the one that really moved me from the very first moment in which I saw it.
Sentía que allí estaba a gusto, y de pronto fui algo más consciente de lo que me había ocurrido en los 3 meses que llevaba en Australia.
I felt I was comfortable there, and, suddenly, I became a bit more conscious of what had happened to me during the past 3 months that I had spent in Australia so far.
En tan solo 3 meses había disfrutado por primera vez todo lo que estaba en mi mano y más. No estaba dejando escapar ni un solo instante: Gold Coast, Brisbane, Byron Bay, North Stradbroke Island, Noosa, Springbrook y Lamington National Parks, la Great Ocean Road, Melbourne y ahora Sídney. Desde que llegué el pasado 2 de octubre a Queensland, ¡aún no había parado ni un fin de semana! Cada fin de semana era un descubrimiento y una razón más por la que vivir, por la que vivir mejor y, ante todo, feliz. Y la Opera House parecía ser el culmen. Había llegado al corazón de la Australia contemporánea.
Within only 3 months I had enjoyed for the first time everything that was in my hands and more. I wasn’t letting any moment escape: the Gold Coast, Brisbane, Byron Bay, North Stradbroke Island, Noosa, Springbrook and Lamington National Parks, the Great Ocean Road, Melbourne, and now Sydney. Since I arrived the last 2nd October in Queensland, I hadn’t stopped even a weekend yet! Every weekend was a discovering and a reason more to live for, live better and, above all, joyfully. And the Opera House seemed suddenly to be the summit of all. I had reached the heart of the contemporaneous Australia.
Seguí paseando bordeando los Jardines Botánicos, disfrutando de las vistas del Puerto y de la ciudad de Sídney. Ojalá volverme a sentir así. Yo viví Sídney como el que da un paseo por alrededor de su hogar, sintiendo cada rincón de una forma natural: el Coastal Walk desde Bondi hasta Coogee, el cruzar a pie el Harbour Bridge y el tomar el ferry hasta Manly Beach. Al igual que me ocurre con Brisbane, ahora puedo comprender por qué la gente disfruta tanto viviendo en Sídney.
I kept on walking around the Botanic Gardens, enjoying the views of the quay and the city of Sydney. I wish I felt again like this. I experienced Sydney as who goes for a walk around his/her home, feeling every corner in a natural way: the Coastal Walk from Bondi to Coogee, crossing Harbour Bridge on foot, taking the ferry to Manly Beach… As it happens to me in Brisbane, now I can understand why everyone enjoys living in Sydney so much.
Coastal walk desde Bondi Beach hasta Coogee
Bondi. El barrio donde parece ser que todos quieren vivir. Un barrio distendido, con buen ambiente, con playa y… Con el Coastal Walk.
Bondi. The suburb where it seems everyone wants to live in. A relaxing, easy-going suburb, with beach and with the Coastal Walk.
El Coastal Walk es un paseo de unos 6 kilómetros, aproximadamente 2 horas, que bordea parte de la costa de Sídney, desde la zona de Bondi hasta la de Coogee; y que supone afortunadamente un contacto constante con la naturaleza desde la propia ciudad.
The Coastal Walk is a promenade of 6 kilometers, an around 2 hours walk, that shapes part of the coast of Sydney, from Bondi to Coogee. And what I like the most from it is the continuous contact with nature that you can fortunately enjoy without even moving at all from the city.
Muchos la recorren haciendo ejercicio, otros dando un paseo y otros posiblemente disfrutando de determinados puntos, como por ejemplo las piscinas Bondi Icebergs sobre las que rompen las olas del Pacífico (fotos de abajo).
Many people walk along it while working out, other going for a walk and others may possibly enjoy just certain spots of the Walk, such as the pools from Bondi Icebergs, where the waves from the Pacific Ocean break (see the photos below)!
Sea como sea, merece la pena. A mí me pilló un día nublado y aun así fue precioso. Acantilados, el sonido y el movimiento del mar, esas piscinas desde las cuales puedes sentir el océano… Este se trata indudablemente de otro de los iconos de Sydney.
However it is, it’s always worth it. I had such a cloudy day, but still it was absolutely beautiful. Cliffs, the sound and the movement of the sea, those pools from where you can feel the ocean… This is undoubtedly another symbol of Sydney.
Ha de ser realmente precioso y agradable vivir por aquí y poder recorrerte el Coastal Walk semanalmente (¡o incluso diariamente!).
It must be really beautiful and peaceful to live here and be able to walk along the Coastal Walk weekly (or even daily!).
El Puente del Puerto de Sídney o Harbour Bridge
Para quien le apasione la ingeniería y puentes, o simplemente para quien quiera sentirse especial cruzando el Puerto de Sídney, y disfrutando de la Opera House desde una nueva perspectiva, así como despejarse dando un paseo, ¡el Puente del Puerto de Sídney es otra opción que vale mucho la pena! Mientras que el Coastal Walk te da una visión del estilo de vida en Sídney, pasear por Harbour Bridge es otra actividad que como turista no te puedes perder.
For whoever who is passionate about engineering or bridges, or simply for whoever who wants to feel special while crossing Sydney’s quay, as well as enjoying seeing the Opera House from a new perspective, Harbour Bridge is another option worth considering! While the Coastal Walk provides you a view of the lifestyle in Sydney, walking along Harbour Bridge is another activity you cannot miss as a tourist -and local, of course.
Además, para acceder allí puedes ir dando un paseo por el barrio de The Rocks, el lugar de Australia donde tuvo lugar el primer asentamiento europeo, allá en 1788. ¡El primero!
In addition, to access there you can go for a walk first around The Rocks, which is the area of Sydney which was first settled back in 1788. The first one!
A cada paso por el Harbour Bridge descubría una perspectiva que me encantaba y además se convirtió en un lugar más que divertido y especial al darse la casualidad de que nos encontramos allí tres amigas de clase (de mi curso de inglés en Brisbane)… ¡¡¡En el mismo punto y en el mismo instante!!! ¡¡¡Eso no estaba preparado!!! Y es que fue tan divertido que no solo coincidiéramos dos compañeras por casualidad, ¡sino tres! Así que ya Harbour Bridge se convirtió en otro lugar mágico para mí.
With every step along the Harbour Bridge I could discover a new perspective that I loved, and, moreover, it turned out to be in a fun and special place as it was the spot where we met completely by coincidence two of my classmates from Brisbane and I… At the same moment and place! That wasn’t prepared! So Harbour Bridge became another magical spot for me!
Por cierto, para los más atrevidos y amantes de la adrenalina, ¡se puede escalar el puente! Tan solo hay que inscribirse con antelación.
By the way, for those ones who are daring and adrenaline lovers, you can climb the top of the bridge! You only need to sign up beforehand.
Manly beach
¿Vives en Sídney y quieres despejarte y sentir que has viajado «sin moverte de casa»? ¡Visitar una de las playitas de Sídney es otra actividad que no podéis dejar pasar si vais a esta gran ciudad! Sentiréis el toque aussie que le podría faltar a otras ciudades sin playa.
Do you live in Sydney and you want to disconnect and feel you have travelled without moving from home? Visiting one of the Sydney beaches is another activity you can’t let go if you go to this great city! You’ll feel that aussie style others cities can miss if they don’t have beach.
Además, una vez en Sídney, es clave coger al menos uno de los ferries que os llevan a otro rincón de la ciudad y disfrutar tanto del paseo en sí en ferry como de las playas. Y no es que éstas sean las mejores del mundo -depende posiblemente de lo cerca o lejos que estés del corazón de la ciudad- pero merecen mucho la pena porque te permiten disfrutar de distintos paisajes y sentir que has desconectado de la rutina. ¡La playa siempre ayuda!
Besides, once in Sydney, it is key to take at least one of the ferries from Circular Quay to any other spot of the city, and enjoying both the way itself and the beaches. And actually, these are not the best beaches in the world, but they are truly worth it as they let you enjoy different landscapes and feel you have disconnected from the routine. Beach always helps!
Además, vayas donde vayas, mientras haya gente, el ambiente surfero está asegurado, y eso lo hace a la vez más exótico para nosotros… ¡Y más australiano! 😉
What’s more, wherever you go, as long as there are people, the surfer atmosphere is guaranteed, and this makes it even more exotic for us… And more Australian! 😉
En nuestro caso fuimos a Manly Beach. Está a un ratito corto en ferry desde Circular Quay (es fácil saber qué ferry tomar y para ello sólo necesitas la Opal Card -de la que hablo más abajo-) y cuando nos bajamos allí me sentí en una zona de veraneo, con heladerías y tiendas típicas de zona de playa.
In our case we went to Manly Beach, probably the most typical one. It is a short way by ferry from Circular Quay (it is easy to know which ferry to take, and for that you’ll only need the Opal Card), and, when we got down there, I felt like in a summer holidays location, with ice cream shops and typical shops from a beach location.
Un momento que guardo con mucho cariño de allí es el encontrarme también con uno de mis mejores amigos de clase de Brisbane, mi desastre chileno Luis. ¡Sídney fue totalmente mi punto de encuentro aún lejos de Brisbane! Además, resulta especial saber que, aunque en distintos puntos de la ciudad, todos vamos a estar bajo los mismos fuegos artificiales de Año Nuevo mientras damos la bienvenida al 2017 🙂
A memory I keep with a lot of affection is the moment in which I met as well another of my best friends from my Brisbane class, my disastrous Chilean Luis. Sydney was certainly my meeting point even far from Brisbane! In addition, it feels special to know that, even from different spots of the city, we’re all under the same New Year’s fireworks the following day to welcome the year 2017 🙂

Fish Market
Otro sitio que podéis visitar y que es de los más turísticos de Sídney es la lonja o Fish Market.
Other place you can visit and which is one of the most touristy ones from Sydney is the Fish Market.
Sídney es una ciudad muy costera (también lo sabemos por la película Buscando a Nemo) así que no es de extrañar que tenga un mercado tan importante de pescado. Eso sí, es muy muy turístico, así que cuando vayas sé paciente, porque habrá mucha gente, pero merecerá la pena, porque es divertido ver la cantidad de pescados, cangrejos, ostras, etc que tienen, ¡y los precios tan caros para ciertos pescados! Sin embargo, también me dio pena ver como tienen tantos animales metidos en la misma pecera, como me ocurrió con las langostas que podéis ver abajo y como ocurre en todos los mercados, como es normal.
Sydney is a very coastal city (we also know it because of the film Finding Nemo) so it is not surprising that it has such an important fish market. However, it is very very touristy, so when you go there, remember to be patient, as there will be many people. Anyway, it will be still worth it, as it is fun to see the big amount of fish, crabs, oysters, etc that they have, and the expensive prices for certain species! Nevertheless, I didn’t like seeing how they contain so many animals alive inside the same container, like the lobsters below and as it happens in every market in the world, as it is usual.
Puedes comer allí también, algo que hace mucha gente, y sin duda estará rico, pero bien es cierto que debes ir pensando que no te va a salir tampoco tirado de precio, especialmente si tu presupuesto es de estudiante como el mío. Pero para un tapeíto tampoco está mal darse el capricho.
You can also eat there, and this is something many people do. Without a doubt, it will be yummy, but it is also true that it may be a bit expensive for you, so if you budget is a student one as mine, maybe is not that pricey. However, for a snack is not bad to spoil yourself.
Darling Harbour
Este sitio, aunque no muy grande, es bastante bonito. Allí puedes encontrar restaurantes y bares para tomar algo alrededor de un muelle con yates. Tiene su toque, especialmente de noche. Además, si eres más de visitar museos o establecimientos del estilo, allí encontrarás el Acuario y el Museo de Cera, aunque yo no visité ninguno.
This place, not very big though’, is quite beautiful. You can find here many restaurants and bars to drink something around this little port of yachts. It has its own style, specially at night. Besides, if you like visiting museums or similar places, you can go to the Aquarium and the Wax Museum in here, although I didn’t visit any of them.

Y por último pero no menos importante (ya que es imprescindible), he de mencionar cómo moveros por Sídney. Para ello se usa la Opal Card, un bonobús del estilo la Myki Card en Victoria como os conté en el Capítulo 5: Melbourne, y de la Go Card de Queensland y que yo tanto usé.
And last but not less (as it is essential), I should mention how to move around Sydney. For this you’ll use the Opal Card, like the one you can find in Victoria (Myki Card) as I already explained in Capítulo 5: Melbourne, and in Queensland (Go Card).

Sí, os la podéis sacar en la propia estación de trenes, por ejemplo, que es donde me la saqué yo, y es totalmente gratuita, ¡así que genial por si venís de turismo o se os pierde la que ya teníais! Eso sí, estad atentos porque el sistema funciona algo distinto al de la Go Card de Queensland y al de la Myki de Victoria… Yo no la entendí bien y por desgracia para New South Wales pero por fortuna para mí, me ahorré unos dólares.
Yes, you can get it at the train station, for example, which is where I got mine, and completely for free, so it is perfect if you are a tourist or if you lose the one you had! But pay attention ‘cause the system works a bit different from the one for Go Card in Queensland or Myki Card from Victoria… I didn’t understand it well so unfortunately for New South Wales but fortunately for me, I saved some dollars because of it.

Y, por cierto, CONSEJAZO de verdad para ahorraros dinero es coger el último tren camino al aeropuerto (o a la estación de trenes o simplemente el último viaje en bus o tren que hagáis en Sídney) quedándoos poco dinero en la tarjeta (pero no demasiado poco, porque entonces no te dejarán pasar) de modo que luego se os quede con saldo negativo… ¡Y os habréis ahorrado esos dólares! 😀
And by the way, a GREAT PIECE OF ADVICE for you to save some money is to take the last train to the airport (or wherever) having a low balance in your card (but not too low as then the system wouldn’t let you pass) so after using it you will end up with negative balance! And through this process you’ll have saved those dollars! 😀
Yo lo hice de camino al aeropuerto y partiendo de aproximadamente 2 dólares en la tarjeta, ésta quedó en negativo (-8 dólares tal vez), ¡y por tanto me ahorré esos 8 dólares! 😀 ¿No viene nada mal, eh?
I did that on my way to the airport and having approximately 2 AUD in my card, this one ended up in negative balance (around -8 AUD probably)! So I saved up those 8 dollars! It isn’t useless at all, don’t you think? 😀
PD: Creo que esta tarjeta había que recargarla de 10 en 10 dólares… Mientras que la Myki podía ser de 5 en 5 y la Go Card de 7 en 7, creo. ¡Como Queensland, no hay nada! 😛
PS: I think this card you needed to top it up with 10 AUD at a time… While the Myki could be 5 AUD and the Go Card 7 AUD, I think… For me, there’s nothing as good as Queensland! 😛
