Melbourne es la segunda ciudad más conocida de Australia y por esta misma razón… ¡No podía perdérmela! Junto con Sydney, era el destino que más ganas tenía de conocer durante mi break verano-navideño.
Melbourne is the second most popular city in Australia and for this reason… I couldn’t miss it! Together with Sydney, it was the destination I felt the most like visiting during my summer-christmas break.
Por eso mismo al principio me resultó algo raro comenzar mi viaje en mitad de la «nada», explorando la Great Ocean Road, sin realmente descubrir primero la capital, Melbourne. Sin embargo, y como ya comenté en el capítulo anterior… La Great Ocean Road me conquistó y fue sin duda ¡lo mejor de mi viaje!
Right because of that it felt strange at first to start my trip in the middle of ‘nowhere’, exploring the Great Ocean Road without having discovered the capital city of the state before. However, as I already said in my previous chapter… The Great Ocean Road conquered me and it was with no doubt… The best place of my trip!
Me quedaría recordando cada acantilado, cada foto y cada anécdota, pero eso sí, Melbourne también merece la pena.
I’d keep remembering every cliff, every photo and every anecdote. But Melbourne is also worth it!
Después de casi tres meses rodeada de puro ambiente australiano en el Estado de Queensland, el cual parece más americano que británico, Melbourne es capaz de teletransportarte (por fin, porque nunca está de más sentir tus raíces) a Europa, concretamente a Inglaterra.
After almost three months surrounded by such a pure Australian atmosphere in Queensland, a state which seems more American than British, Melbourne was finally capable of teletransporting me to Europe (specially to England)! It is great to feel your origins from time to time.
Cómo moverse por la ciudad en transporte público. How to move around the city by public transport.
Southern Cross station
La bienvenida a Melbourne nos la da la estación de Southern Cross, bastante bonita arquitectónicamente para ser Australia, y desde la cual cogemos el tranvía para movernos por la ciudad.
Our welcome in Melbourne took place at Southern Cross Station, quite architectonically beautiful for being Australia, and from which we took the tram for moving around the city.
Tranvía / Tram
El tranvía es el medio de transporte público más utilizado, al menos por los turistas. Los hay modernos pero también antiguos, lo cual le da un punto más original a Melbourne, ya que te hace sentir en una ciudad con historia aunque ésta sea limitada al siglo XVIII.
The tram is the most used public transport, at least by tourists. There are modern trams but also old ones, which are really cool as they make Melbourne more original.
¡Y lo mejor es que hay TRANVÍA GRATIS! Es una línea que recorre todo el centro de la ciudad, así que si te lo montas bien el transporte te saldrá prácticamente gratis todo el tiempo que visites Melbourne. De hecho, para los turistas en concreto es perfecto.
And the best thing is that there is free tram! It covers all the city centre, so luckily travelling in Melbourne will cost practically nothing.
¡Necesitas la myki card! / You need your myki card!
Para movernos por la ciudad utilizamos en todo momento la tarjeta myki, el bonobús del estado de Victoria*. Por suerte, yo la conseguí de una amiga, ya que hay que pagar para obtenerla.
For moving around the city you will need all the time your myki card, which is the card to use for the public transport in the state of Victoria*. Luckily, I got it from a friend who had already been there, as you have to pay to get it.
*Al menos en los estados de Victoria, New South Wales y Queensland se usa una tarjeta para el sistema de transporte público que sirve para usarla en buses, trenes y ferries. En Sydney (opal card) es gratis pero en Queensland (go card) y en Melbourne (myki) tienes que pagar alrededor de 10$ para conseguir la tarjeta, y luego ya incluirle el saldo.
* At least in the states of Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland they use a card for the public transport system (buses, trains and ferries). In Sydney (opal card) it is for free but in Queensland (go card) and Melbourne (myki) you need to pay around 10$ for getting it and then for topping it up.

Queen Victoria market
Queen Victoria Market es uno de los sitios más antiguos de Melbourne, por lo que es un buen lugar para teletransportarte y hacerte una idea de cómo era Melbourne cuando los ingleses comenzaron a vivir en Australia.
Queen Victoria Market is one of the oldest places in Melbourne, so it is a good location to travel to and imagine the Melbourne when the English were starting to live in Australia.
Lo que más me llamó la atención es el contraste con los altos edificios del centro de la ciudad, ya que se encuentra a pocos metros de ella pero lo suficientemente alejada para verla con perspectiva. ¡Eso es lo que tiene Australia y que hace que sus ciudades sean especiales!
What attracted me the most was the contrast between the high buildings from the city centre and the market itself. They are few metres far from it but far enough to see them with perspective. This is what makes Australian cities special!
Por esa misma razón pasear por este mercado tiene su encanto. Además, en él puedes encontrar todo tipo de alimentos: carne, pescado, quesos, dulces, zumos… ¡Y hasta jamón «serrano» y chorizo «español»!
For this same reason walking around this market has its beauty. In addition, you can find any type of food there: meat, fish, cheese, pastries, juices… Even ‘jamón serrano’ and ‘Spanish’ chorizo!
Pero claro, esto último tampoco me lo llego a creer. ¿Español? Toda la comida que pretenden que sepa a comida española nunca llega a tener ni la mitad del sabor español… Así que por esa razón no he probado nunca ni los churros españoles que parecen ser tan populares en Brisbane ni cualquier otro producto que dicen ser español.
But obviously I won’t believe the latter one. Spanish? All the food that is supposed to taste as Spanish never tastes half Spanish. That’s why I have never tried neither the popular Spanish churros in Brisbane nor any other ‘Spanish’ product.
¡Pero lo que sí encontré fue a un gaditano y a una valenciana cocinando una gran paella en la entrada del Queen Victoria Market! Por recomendación de una amiga que fue un par de horas antes, la compré (13$/plato) y… ¡Por fin una comida auténtica! ¡Y posiblemente el único buen plato de comida que he tomado en Australia (aparte de la comida tailandesa de un restaurante que había al lado de mi residencia en Brisbane)! Así que me sentí especial y orgullosa de nuestra comida y de dar a conocer a los extranjeros el plato que a todos les suena pero que nunca han podido llegar a probar 🙂
But what I did find were two Spanish cooking paella in the entrance of Queen Victoria Market! A friend who had gone there two hours before suggested it so I got it ($13 per dish) and… Finally authentic food! And possibly the only good dish I’ve had in Australia! Thus I felt special and proud of our cuisine and of getting it to the foreigners as they always talk about it but never have tried it.
Dato importante a tener en cuenta: Queen Victoria Market no está abierto todo el tiempo que queramos, ¡a más de uno le ha pasado que ha ido y se lo ha encontrado cerrado! Por lo general, está cerrado por las tardes y los lunes y miércoles día completo. Es decir, que solo abre unas cuantas mañanas a la semana. To keep in mind: Queen Victoria Market is not open 24/7, many tourists go there and find it closed! Generally, it is closed every afternoon and full Mondays and Wednesdays. City
Melbourne es pasear por la ciudad y disfrutar de su ambiente. Es cierto que al principio dije que transmitía un aire europeo -concretamente británico-, pero realmente cuando caminas por el centro de la ciudad te das cuenta de que muchos de los establecimientos son asiáticos.
Melbourne is walking around the city and enjoying its atmosphere. It is true that at first I said it brings an European British air, but when you really walk along the city centre you also realize that many of the establishments are Asian.
Después de vivir en Brisbane, ¡no me parecía raro! Es parte de la esencia de Australia. ¡Tienes más variedad para comer! 😉 De hecho un día comí en un restaurante japonés en Chinatown que no estaba nada mal y otro día en un vietnamita.
After living in Brisbane, I didn’t find it strange! This is the essence of Australia. You have more variety for food! 😉 Actually one day I ate lunch in a Japanese restaurant at Chinatown while another day I ate at a Vietnamese.
Además paseando por el centro puedes echarle un vistazo a los rooftops que están dispersos por la ciudad. Estos son bares en las plantas más altas de algunos edificios en los cuales te puedes tomar una cerveza mientras disfrutas de la noche en el corazón de la city. ¡Son muy populares! En mi caso fui al rooftop Cookie, justo al lado de Chinatown, en una de las calles principales de la ciudad.
Besides, while walking around the city centre you can have a look to the rooftops you can find over there. These are bars located on the highest floor of some buildings, where you can drink a beer while you enjoy the night in the heart of the city. They are really popular! In my case I went to rooftop Cookie, just next to Chinatown, in one of the main streets of the city.
Melbourne Central
También por el centro de la ciudad puedes encontrarte este centro comercial. Por su nombre pensé que era la estación céntrica de Melbourne, pero no. Es un centro comercial enorme y perfecto para refugiarse de la lluvia, ¡como me pasó a mí! ¡Y también es bonito porque te puedes encontrar una vista tan peculiar dentro del propio edificio como la que muestro en la foto de arriba!
You can also find around the city centre this shopping center. Because of the name you can think it is the central station of Melbourne, but it isn’t; indeed it is a huge shopping center perfect for a rainy day as I had! And it is also beautiful as you can find interesting views inside the building as the one I show in the picture above!
Como bien te dicen siempre que se habla de Melbourne,
¡Melbourne es la ciudad de las cuatro estaciones en un día!
Y así lo comprobé:
- Cuando llegué, en 18 de diciembre (pleno verano), hacia un frío ¡de invierno! Como 10ºC.
- Pero menos de una semana después, ¡un calor de 30º!
- Y en ese mismo día que te hace ese calor de 30ºC y que vas sudando como nunca… ¡Por la tarde te cae un diluvio que dura horas!
El tiempo en Australia es completamente incomprensible e impredecible, y Brisbane también tiene lo suyo: Porque lo mismo te viene de pronto una tormenta eléctrica tropical sin que te lo avisen en las predicciones del tiempo meteorológico como que te dicen que te va a diluviar y a caer un rayo encima durante una semana completa y luego solo te llueve un poquito un par de noches… ¡Así es Australia! 🙂
As you are always told when talking about Melbourne,
Melbourne is the city of the 4 seasons in 1 day!
And I proved it:
- When I got there last 18t December (summer), it was absolutely winter cold! Around 10ºC.
- But just few days later, a 30ºC heat!
- And that same day in the afternoon, it rained a lot!
The weather in Australia is completely incomprehensible and unpredictable, and Brisbane is also unique: You may have one day a tropical thunderstorm without previous warning on the broadcast and another day you may be told it is going to rain as never before and you are gonna get a lightning strike for a whole week but then it just rains a little bit a couple of nights… This is Australia! 🙂
State Library of Victoria
La biblioteca municipal de Melbourne, llamada State Library of Victoria, es uno de los principales atractivos turísticos de Melbourne. Bueno, como las ciudades australianas tampoco tienen mucho que ver, afortunadamente tratan de hacer bonitos algunos de los edificios. Y éste es una prueba de ello.
The local library of Melbourne, called State Library of Victoria, is one of the main touristy attractions in Melbourne. Well, Australian cities do not have sooo many things to see, but fortunately they try to make some buildings pretty beautiful, as this one!
Ya es bonito estar sentada fuera tomándote un ubicuo Boost (foto de arriba)… Como entrar dentro y darte un paseo por la sala más fotografiada de la biblioteca (foto de abajo), ¡la que la hace ser tan popular!
It is as beautiful to sit outside the library having an ubiquitous Boost (photo above)… As going inside and walking around the most photographed room of the library (photo below), which makes it be that popular!
Esta es la sala más popular de la State Library of Victoria. Me encantó la amplitud de la sala, que además la puedes ver desde cualquiera de esos balcones que se ven en la foto; el mobiliario que te da la sensación de estar estudiando en Howarts; y esas lámparas verdes taaaan chulas que desde que entré ahí ¡deseé tener una en mi cuarto! This is the most popular room of the State Library of Victoria.
St. Paul’s Cathedral (anglican) & St. Patrick’s Cathedral (catholic)
Aquí en Australia siempre encontrarás una gran iglesia parecida a una catedral europea (aunque sin su esplendor), que será la catedral anglicana. La católica suele estar también por el centro de la ciudad, pero no en el punto más concurrido.
Here in Australia you will always find a big church similar to a cathedral (although without its greatness), which will be the Anglican Cathedral. The Catholic cathedral is usually around the city centre as well but not in the most popular location, as it happens with the Anglican.
Y en general las iglesias aquí no son tan bonitas como las europeas, por lo que este tipo de turismo no merece tanto la pena en Australia. Pero concretamente más en Melbourne que en Brisbane diría recomendaría visitar las catedrales, especialmente la anglicana.
And generally churches here are not as beautiful as the Europeans, thus this type of tourism is not as worth it here in Australia. Nevertheless, in Melbourne it is nicer to visit the cathedrals rather than in Brisbane, specially the Anglican.
Flinders Station
Esta estación, que data de 1910, sí que es la principal de Melbourne. Es bonita por fuera y es la que tomé para llegar a Brighton Beach. Posiblemente sea el lugar más típico de Melbourne, uno de sus símbolos y la foto que todo el mundo publica en sus redes sociales cuando viene de viaje.
This station, original from 1910, is the main one in Melbourne. It is beautiful from outside and it is the one I took to get to Brighton Beach. It is likely to be the most typical place in Melbourne, one of its symbols and the photo everyone posts in the social media when they come as a trip.
Federation Square
Se dice que Melbourne es la ciudad cultural de Australia y la verdad es que paseando por algunas de sus calles y llegando a esta plaza lo puedes notar. Es una zona abierta con un edificio de arquitectura moderna que contrasta con St. Paul’s Cathedral y Flinders Station justo al lado. ¡Da gusto acercarse a esta zona y tiene justo en ella una de las paradas del tranvía gratis (hay otras dos justo en la State Library)!
It is said Melbourne is the cultural city of Australia and it is true that walking around some of its streets and getting closer to this square you can feel it. This is an open area with a building with modern architecture that contrasts with St. Paul’s Cathedral and Flinders Station right next to it. It is a pleasure to come over here!
National Gallery of Victoria
Una vez que cruzas el puente principal de la ciudad, apareces en la entrada de la National Gallery of Victoria, el museo de arte de la ciudad. También un buen sitio para resguardarse de la lluvia.
Once you cross the main bridge of the city, you turn up at the entrance of the National Gallery of Victoria, the art museum of the city. It is also a nice place provided it rains!
Como todos los museos o National Galleries en Australia (al menos Brisbane, Melbourne y Sydney), es gratis y tiene piezas de arte de Japón, China y Australia, principalmente arte aborigen en el caso de esta última. Así que puede resultar interesante para darse una vuelta, especialmente si te interesa el arte, pero tampoco te esperes un Museo del Prado o del Louvre.
As every other museum or National Gallery in Australia (at least Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney), it is free and it has pieces of art from Japan, China and Australia, mainly aboriginal art! So it could be interesting to have a look specially if you are interested in art, but don’t expect a Museo del Prado or Louvre Museum either.
Botanic Gardens & Shrine of Remembrance
Los Botanic Gardens están también al otro lado del puente y son inmensos. ¡No me dio tiempo a recorrerlos todos!
The Botanic Gardens are at the other side of the bridge and they are huge. I didn’t have enough time to see all of them!
Y así andando por los jardines vi de pronto un gran edificio en medio de otro parque y que tenía toda la pinta de un edificio típico europeo, al menos porque la arquitectura era también como de estilo neoclásico. Atraída por algo así interesante, nos acercamos a él y resulta que se trataba del Shrine of Remembrance, literalmente un «altar al recuerdo» de las guerras en las que participó gloriosamente Australia.
And walking around the gardens I suddenly saw a big building in the middle of another park and really similar to some European building, at least because of the neoclassical style in its architecture. Attracted by it, I went closer and then I realized it was the Shrine of Remembrance, like a «shrine» to remember the wars in which Australia (successfully) took part. Or at least that’s what I noticed.
Porque aquí he visto que les encanta poner monumentos con los nombres de los soldados y plazas en honor a las guerras y a la conquista de cada rincón australiano. Al principio me gustaba este sitio por ser distinto pero luego me dio una sensación agridulce por estar rodeada de tanto recuerdo bélico y que terminó siendo amarga cuando además no nos dejaron movernos de una sala en la que aparecimos justo cuando estaban empezando un rito como de un minuto de silencio por los que batallaron en la guerra. Muy raro… De hecho el sitio me transmitió mucho una sensación de haber aterrizado en el Capitolio del mundo ficticio de Los Juegos del Hambre.
Because here I’ve seen the love to build monuments with the names of the soldiers and squares in honour to the conquer of every Australian corner. At first I liked this place but then I got a bittersweet feeling because of being surrounded by so many war memories. Besides, when we were leaving the place, we had to wait for a kind of minute of silence for the people who fought in those wars. Very weird… I could really feel I had landed in the Capitol from the fictitious world of The Hunger Games.
Eureka tower
También en este lado del río, tirando por la derecha de la National Gallery y siguiendo el curso del río, podemos llegar a la Eureka tower, un rascacielos desde el que todo el mundo ve la vista panorámica de Melbourne.
Also on this riverside, on the right of the National Gallery and following the course of the river, you can get to Eureka tower, a skyscraper from which everyone sees the panoramic view from Melbourne.
En mi caso, y en el de la mayoría de los que conozco que hayan visitado la ciudad, fui de noche. Pienso que en el sunset, el atardecer, es más bonito, porque a menudo el cielo se ve rosado y porque personalmente la vista me dejó que desear.
In my case, and for most of the people that I know who have also been to Melbourne, I went in the night. Personally I think the sunset is more beautiful as you can often see the sky with a pink colour.
Tal vez tenía demasiadas expectativas, ya que cuesta unos 18$ si no recuerdo mal y todo el mundo va, lo publica en las redes sociales, etc. Pero para mi gusto lo encontré demasiado caro, aunque tengo amigos que les gustó mucho y a fin de cuentas es algo que todos hacen (para quien no quiera perderse nada que todo el mundo ve). Aun así, también es verdad que las panorámicas de las ciudades no me sorprenden especialmente*, ¡así que a gusto de cada uno!
Perhaps I had too many expectations, as it costed around $18 and everyone who goes there they post on the social media, etc. But personally I found it too expensive, although I have friends who loved it! Anyway, this is a place everyone goes to and it is true as well that I don’t usually find city panoramas especially surprising*… So up to one’s preferences!
*Tres meses más tarde fui a Tokyo y allí me animé a subir de nuevo a un alto edificio para ver las vistas panorámicas de la ciudad y… ¡Ese sí me gustó mucho! Me mereció la pena 🙂 ¡Lo puedes ver en una entrada que publicaré próximamente!

Brighton beach
¡Aquí llegó el sitio más típico de Melbourne!
Here it is the most typical location in Melbourne!
En realidad está algo alejado, ya que hay que tomar un tren desde la ciudad. Pero luego merece la pena porque resulta entretenido ver las «casitas de colores» que hay en línea en esta playa. Cuando vienes a Australia ves a tooooodo el mundo subiendo fotitos aquí, y más gente hay cuando vas allí. ¡Pero es divertido ir con amigos a estas casitas para comentarlas ellas y hacerte fotos!
Actually it is a bit far as you have to take a train from the city. But then it is worth it as it is amusing to see these «colourful houses». When you come to Australia you see eeeeeveryone uploading photos from here! But it is really funny to go with your friends there to comment on them and take photos!
St. Kilda’s
Y por último pero no por ello menos interesante, aquí presento otra zona algo alejada de Melbourne (alejada porque se escapa del círculo de transporte público gratis) a la que puedes llegar en tranvía.
And finally but not less interesting, here I show another but also a bit far area from Melbourne. You can come here by tram although it is not part of the free zone.
Y es interesante porque si te gustan los pingüinos… ¡Tienes que venir a St. Kilda’s!
And it is interesting because if you like penguins… St. Kilda’s is your place!
Porque resulta que a la costa de este suburbio vienen pinguïnos todas las noches de forma natural a alojarse entre unas rocas que dan a un puerto. Está muy bien cuidado por una organización que mira por estos pinguïnos y mucha gente va desde la tarde a plantarse allí para ver cómo se acercan a ese trocito de playa.
It happens that in the shore of this suburb penguins come naturally every night to some rocks in front of a port. There is an organization that takes care of them as many people come here from the evening to wait for them to come to this little portion of beach.
Dato importante a tener en cuenta: Los pingüinos aparecen en St. Kilda’s una vez que ya se ha hecho de noche. En mi caso fue a las 9pm (al menos teniendo en cuenta que era diciembre, pleno verano), así que recomiendo llegar a esa hora o algo antes. Y no solo mires en la franja de arena, ¡también los puedes encontrar entre las rocas! 🙂
It is important to keep in mind: Penguins turn up at St. Kilda’s once it is already night. In my case it was 9pm (at least being December, summer), so I suggest that you come at this time or earlier. And don’t look only on the sand, you can also find them among the rocks! 🙂
