Después de haber aprendido a sentirme parte de mi precioso Estado australiano, Queensland, toca aprovechar el break de las vacaciones verano-navideñas para descubrir uno nuevo para mí… ¡Victoria!

After learning how to feel part of my beautiful aussie state, Queensland, now it is time to take the most of the summer-christmas break to discover a new state for me… Victoria!

Aunque por ahora todo lo que he escuchado sobre la Great Ocean Road ha sido unido a «Melbourne», para mí este ha sido el mejor destino de mi viaje y lo puedo considerar completamente independiente de Melbourne.

Although until this time everything I heard about Great Ocean Road was linked to «Melbourne», for me this has been the best destination of my trip and I can consider it completely independent from Melbourne.

Tras el background que ya tengo de los lugares que he visitado en Queensland y tras haber finalizado este viaje de dos semanas y media por el sudeste australiano, en el que he visitado las ciudades principales de Australia, puedo por fin afirmar con total seguridad que… Australia no es sus ciudades, sino su naturaleza.

After the background that I already have from the places I have visited in Queensland, and after having ended this two weeks and a half trip through the southeast of Australia -in which I visited the main cities from Australia, now I can finally say that… Australia is not its cities, but its nature.

Y la Great Ocean Road no lo es menos.
And the Great Ocean Road is not less.

Nunca esperé que una carretera pudiera ser un destino turístico -en el que real y afortunadamente no me sentí turista, sino viajera. Y fue muy fácil distinguirla nada más adentrarnos en ella, pues en cuanto comienzas a ver el océano, ahí estás, en la Great Ocean Road.

I never expected that a road could be a touristy destination -in which I really and fortunately felt not a tourist, but a traveller. And it was very easy to recognise the Great Ocean Road as soon as you get into it, as when you start seeing the ocean, there you are, in the Great Ocean Road.

¡Y es así durante al menos un par de horas! Playa tras playa, curva tras curva, acantilado tras acantilado… Y siempre con el Pacífico de fondo presumiendo de un azul increíble. ¡No podía parar de mirar por la ventana!

And it is like this at least for a couple of hours! Beach after beach, curve after curve, cliff after cliff… And always with the Pacific ocean as background, presuming of its incredible blue colour. I couldn’t stop looking through the window!

Itinerario / Itinerary

Nuestra idea fue disfrutar tranquilamente de la Great Ocean Road pasando un total de tres noches: una en Apollo Bay y dos en Port Campbell.

Our idea was to enjoy very relaxingly the Great Ocean Road spending a total of three nights there: one in Apollo Bay and two in Port Campbell.

Partimos el 20 de diciembre desde Melbourne (Southern Cross Station), donde tomamos un tren hasta Geelong, y desde ahí un bus con destino Apollo Bay.

We departed the 20th December from Melbourne (Southern Cross Station), where we took a train to Geelong, and from there a bus bound to Apollo Bay.

Apollo Bay se trata de uno de los principales pueblos que protagonizan la Great Ocean Road, ya que allí van bastantes turistas. Imagino que su principal interés turístico es la playa, desde la cual se aprecian unas vistas preciosas de la zona rural que rodea al pueblo; sin embargo, para playas increíbles tengo Queensland… O incluso Port Campbell, nuestro segundo destino en la Great Ocean Road.

Apollo Bay is one of the main towns that form the Great Ocean Road, as quite many tourists go there. I imagine that its main touristic attraction is the beach, from which you can appreciate beautiful views of the rural area that surrounds the town. However, for beautiful beaches I already have Queensland… Or even Port Campbell, our second destination in the Great Ocean Road.

Port Campbell me encantó desde el primer momento en el que lo ví desde el autobús. Es un pueblecito situado en una zona de montaña que a su vez abraza una pequeña playa dando al océano. Todo está rodeado de verde y su contraste con esta playa es lo que le da el toque que hace que tanto me gustara.

I loved Port Campbell since the first moment I saw it from the bus. It is a little town located on a mountain zone that embraces at the same time a little beach that gives access to the ocean. Everything is surrounded by green and its contrast with the beach is what made me love it so much.

Twelve Apostles

Y desde Port Campbell fuimos hacia el punto que atrae a todos los turistas hacia Great Ocean Road y el cual puede ser perfectamente el top 3 de Australia junto con la Opera House y la Great Barrier Reef… ¡Twelve Apostles!

And from Port Campbell we went towards the spot that attracts all the tourists that come to the Great Ocean Road, and which can be perfectly the top 3 of Australia together with the Opera House and the Great Barrier Reef… Twelve Apostles!

La verdad es que a diferencia de las anteriores yo no sabía para nada de su existencia hasta que aquí me encontré con todos mis amigos yendo allí super encantados a estos acantilados cuando iban a Melbourne… O mejor dicho, que parecía que iban a Melbourne aprovechando que querían ir a Twelve Apostles (porque es sin duda lo que más gusta de «Melbourne», aunque Melbourne esté a varias horas en bus).

It is true that unlike the other two Australian destinations, I didn’t know anything at all about the existence of Twelve Apostles until I found out here that all my friends went very happily to these cliffs when they went to Melbourne… Or I’d rather say, that it seemed that they went to Melbourne as they wanted to go to Twelve Apostles (as this is without a doubt what everyone likes the most from «Melbourne», even though Melbourne is some hours far by bus).

Twelve Apostles se trata de un conjunto de acantilados (11 actualmente pero 12 hasta hace muy pocos años atrás, de ahí el nombre de «Doce Apóstoles») que da al océano Pacífico desde la costa sur de Australia y que es precioso… Nada más llegar allí sientes que te encuentras ante una postal…

Twelve Apostles is a group of cliffs (currently 11 but 12 until few years ago, that’s why it is named like this) located on the south coast of Australia next to the Pacific Ocean. It is really beautiful… As soon as you get there you can feel you are in a postcard…

…Si no fuera por los turistas.
… Unless for the tourists.

De pronto me sentí como en Roma o cualquier otra gran capital europea plagada de turistas, con la diferencia de que aquí la mayoría son asiáticos, sudamericanos y árabes; aunque hay de todo. ¡No recuerdo haber estado en un sitio turístico con mayor diversidad de nacionalidades! Esto es lo que hace, para mi gusto, que no merezca tanto la pena Twelve Apostles como los demás acantilados y playas que puedes encontrar en la misma carretera. Al fin y al cabo su estilo puede ser también algo semejante al de las playas del Algarve de Portugal. Aun así, sigue siendo sin duda para mí lo que más mereció la pena de «Melbourne», porque lo mejor de Australia -lo vuelvo a decir, porque son una maravilla- son sus paisajes. Y este lo disfruté de una manera especial.

Suddenly I felt like in Rome or any other big European capital city full of tourists, with the difference that here most of them were Asian, Southamerican or Saudis; although there are from anywhere in the world. I don’t remember having been to any touristy place with a higher diversity of nationalities! This crowd is what makes, from my point of view, that is not as worth seeing Twelve Apostles as seeing the other cliffs and beaches that you can find in the same road -and that are practically empty. Anyway, you can also feel that the style of Twelve Apostles is also similar to the one from the beaches from the Algarve in Portugal. Nevertheless, this is still without a doubt what I loved the most from «Melbourne», as the best from Australia -I repeat again, as they are wonderful-, is its landscapes. And I enjoyed this one in a special way.

Y digo especial porque no reservé un tour como el 99% de la gente. Llegué hasta allí en bicicleta, pedaleando 12 km desde Port Campbell.

And I say special because I didn’t book any tour as the 99% of the people do. I got there by bike, pedaling 12 km from Port Campbell.

Es una de las experiencias que más me han gustado desde que estoy en Australia. El tiempo, después de haber sido frío y lluvioso los días anteriores, nos acompañó a la perfección y la carretera es más que bonita. Apenas hay tráfico y la emoción por poder encontrarte un canguro en cualquier momento le da su toque australiano. No vimos ningún canguro, pero eso sí, ¡vi andando a un equidna super cute! Los equidnas son animales muy parecidos al erizo pero algo más grandes.

It is one of the experiences I have liked the most since I came to Australia. The weather, after having been cold and rainy the previous days, was perfect and the road was more than beautiful. There was almost no traffic and the excitement of the possibility of finding a kangaroo at any moment made the experience be pretty aussie. We didn’t see any kangaroo but what we saw it was… A super cute equidna walking along the road! Equidnas are very similar animals to the hedgehog but bigger.

Merece la pena ir en bici porque de pronto descubrir la belleza de Australia se convierte en una peregrinación al corazón de su historia, su geografía y su cultura. Mezclar estos paisajes tonos ocres y verdes, con el océano de intenso azul rompiendo sus gigantescas olas en los sobrecogedores acantilados donde los aborígenes solían vivir… Realmente una experiencia única en la que pudimos explorar acantilado por acantilado cada vez que encontrábamos un sendero que tomar con la bici.

It is worth to go by bike as discovering the beauty of Australia suddenly becomes a pilgrimage to the heart of its history, geography and culture. Mixing all these ochre and green tones landscapes with the intense blue ocean breaking its huge waves on the breathtaking cliffs, where aborigines used to live… It is really such a unique experience in which we could explore cliff by cliff every time we found a path to take by bike.

Me quedaría con estos instantes toda mi vida.
I would keep all these moments for my whole life.

¿Qué transporte utilizamos para llegar a la Great Ocean Road? / Which transportation we took to get to the Great Ocean Road?

Autobús / Bus

Partiendo desde Melbourne:
Departing from Melbourne:

1. Tomamos un tren desde la estación Southern Cross hacia Geelong.
   We took a train from Southern Cross Station to Geelong.
2. Desde Geelong, cogimos un bus hacia Apollo Bay.
   From Geelong, we took a bus to Apollo Bay.
3. En Apollo Bay, a las 1:25pm sale un bus dirección Warnabool (pasando por Twelve Apostles y Port Campbell).
   In Apollo Bay, there is a bus at 1.25pm to Warnabool (passing by Twelve Apostles and Port Campbell).
4. En Warnabool cogimos el tren de vuelta a Melbourne.
   In Warnabool we took the train back to Melbourne.

Todos los horarios están totalmente cuadrados para que puedas hacer todo este recorrido en un mismo día y estés de vuelta en Melbourne a las 8-9pm aproximadamente.

All the timetables are perfectly adjusted so you can do all the way the same day so you can be back in Melbourne at 8-9pm approx.

La compañía con la que viajamos fue V/Line, la compañía regional de transporte de Victoria, y los tickets los compramos en la ventanilla en Southern Cross Station. Los conductores son realmente simpáticos y amables (como siempre aquí en Australia) y hacen una parada de 30 minutos en Twelve Apostles y de 10 minutos en London Arch y London Bridge.

The company we travelled with was V/Line, the regional transport company from Victoria, and we bought the tickets in its window in Southern Cross Station. The drivers are really friendly and kind (as always here in Australia) and they stop 30 minutes in Twelve Apostles and 10 minutes in London Arch and London Bridge.

También se puede reservar un tour desde Melbourne con el que puedes pasar más tiempo viendo Twelve Apostles, London Arch y posiblemente alguno de los otros atractivos turísticos de la Great Ocean Road.

You can also book a tour from Melbourne so you can spend more minutes seeing Twelve Apostles, London Arch and maybe some other attractive spots from the Great Ocean Road.

Coche / Car

Sin embargo, la mejor opción sin duda, como todo en Australia, es alquilar un coche para ir a tu ritmo y ver todos los rincones posibles que no podrías ver de ningún otro modo.

However, the best option without a doubt, as everything in Australia, is to rent a car to go on your own pace and see every possible spot you couldn’t see with any other alternative.

¿Dónde nos alojamos? / Where did we stay?

• Apollo Bay Backpackers Lodge (Apollo Bay): 34$/noche en una habitación de 4 personas. Tiene una sala común que hace las veces de salón, cocina y comedor con muy buen ambiente especialmente si te apetece conocer gente.34$/night in a 4-people room. It has a big living room which is at the same time kitchen and dinning room. It is very nice specially if you want to meet new people.
• Port Campbell Hostel (Port Campbell): 36$/noche en una habitación de 7 personas. Me gustó mucho más este hostel por la decoración, el personal, el ambiente, las habitaciones… Todo un 10. Y además es donde alquilamos la bici para recorrernos la Great Ocean Road (20$ todo el día).36$/night in a 7-people room. I liked this hostel much more because of its decoration, the stuff, the atmosphere, the rooms… Everything was a 10. Besides, it is where we rented the bike to go all over the Great Ocean Road (20$ all day).
